Sustainability
SUMMARY
Sustainability means longevity, "good for the long haul." The city
of Jericho, for example, is the oldest
continuously inhabited city on earth. The Greek alphabet, for example, is the oldest
alphabetic script in continuous use today.
Why are some things sustainable and others short-lived?
1.
Sustainability comes from being functional - meeting a need well. For example, a
city grows near a supply of water and fertile soil for agriculture, or near a
waterway or mountain pass for trade.
2. Sustainability comes from being efficient - supporting the good use of
resources, without waste, so that they last longer.
3. Sustainability comes from being aesthetic - supporting the attraction
of human resources not just for economics but for
culture and lifestyle as well.
A sustainable design is
functional, efficient, and aesthetic. It meets a need, uses its
resources well, and attracts further human resources over time. |

Master Planning Flowchart
How to interact with clients and
subcontractors to achieve a successful, sustainable Second Life
project implementation:
1. The high level concept is the overarching organizing
principle.
2. The high level plan specifies metrics of success including
financial, traffic and publicity goals over time.
3. The detailed component plans address timeline, cash flows,
build lists, resource use, contractors, and staff per standard
business project management methods.
4. The use of scale models of
buildings and terrain (terraforming) allows visualization with client and contractors for improved
resource use, aesthetics and implementation
times. |
